Introduction by Dr. Trevor Thwaites – co-writer of the NZ Curriculum.
Having watched the development and refinement of the Contemporary Music Course written by Clive Cockburn over several years, I would like to offer my support for the resource. Clive’s material slots easily into the New Zealand Curriculum, especially curriculum levels 5-8, and into the NCEA achievement standards, both for theoretical knowledge and composition as well as the Level 2 (Qualifications Framework) Instrumentation standard AS 91273 and the Level 3 Arranging standard AS 91424.
Two Curriculum strands offer a particular focus in the Course:
- Developing Practical Knowledge
- which requires students to apply knowledge of expressive features, stylistic conventions and technologies.
- Developing Ideas in Music
- Focusing on composition, knowledge of instruments and score layout and arranging.
It is a rare opportunity for students to have access to a composer / arranger who has contributed to NZ advertising, film and television music over the years.
