Introduction by Dr. Trevor Thwaites – co-writer of the NZ Curriculum.

Having watched the development and refinement of the Contemporary Music Course written by Clive Cockburn over several years, I would like to offer my support for the resource. Clive’s material slots easily into the New Zealand Curriculum, especially curriculum levels 5-8, and into the NCEA achievement standards, both for theoretical knowledge and composition as well as the Level 2 (Qualifications Framework) Instrumentation standard AS 91273 and the Level 3 Arranging standard AS 91424.

Two Curriculum strands offer a particular focus in the Course:

Developing Practical Knowledge
which requires students to apply knowledge of expressive features, stylistic conventions and technologies.
Developing Ideas in Music
Focusing on composition, knowledge of instruments and score layout and arranging.

It is a rare opportunity for students to have access to a composer / arranger who has contributed to NZ advertising, film and television music over the years.
